Which plaster should you choose - gypsum or traditional cement-lime?
Gypsum has hygroscopic properties, absorbing excess moisture from the environment and giving it away when the air is too dry, thus maintaining the humidity. Unlike cement, gypsum does not shrink during drying and does not appear micro-cracks typical of cement-lime plasters.
Gypsum plaster also allows to obtain a white smooth wall, unfortunately less resistant to mechanical damage - while traditional plaster is much more durable, however, it requires smoothing due to roughness.
Gypsum plasters are also warmer than cement-lime plasters. Their heat transfer coefficient λ reaches 0.28 W / (m · K); this coefficient for cement-lime plasters reaches 0.45 W / (m · K)) - the lower the better.
Gypsum plasters should not be used in places where they will be exposed to mechanical damage, e.g. in workshops or garages. More durable traditional plaster will work better here.
